SMALL_LAND
Area of small islands (ha)
Definition
This is the total
area, in
kilohectares, of small islands in the the entire
SLC polygon. These islands are
too small to depict at the 1:1,000,000 scale of the
HYDRO coverage, and
are classified as water in that coverage.
Units
Hectares (ha)
Notes
- When the version 2.2 SLC and HYDRO coverages were
intersected to create the LAT, some SLC
polygons appeared to have vanishingly small land areas. Values for
SMALL_LAND were manually assigned for these polygons so that
LAND_AREA calculations produce
reasonable numbers.
- In this version, SMALL_LAND refers only to islands surrounded
by fresh water.
- Small islands surrounded by ocean are not included in this
item, or anywhere else in the LAT.
Furthermore, small islands were not identified in lakes which form
part of an SLC polygon with more than 500 ha of land mass, as
determined by an overlay of the SLC and HYDRO coverages. These
deficiencies may be rectified in a future version.
