Description:

Abstract:

Soil Landscapes of Canada polygons are the most detailed spatial entities within the ecological hierarchy employed in Canada.  The hierarchy is as follows: Ecozones->Ecoprovinces->Ecoregions->Ecodistricts->Soil Landscapes of Canada.  The current ‘Version 1.0” of the Ecological Stratification for Canada was published in 1995, and is exactly nested with the SLCv2.2 coverage for all of Canada.  Exact nesting means that a combination of adjoining SLCv2.2 polygons defines each Ecodistrict, and these in turn define the terrestrial Ecoregions and Ecozones within Canada.

SLC polygons represent particular soil and landform features, and many of these boundaries have been spatially refined in SLCv3.1.  The new SLCv3.1 polygon lines have also been adjusted away from shorelines, so that it is fully compatible with the separate 1:1 million scale digital base map hydrology layers.  In some areas, the SLCv3.1 polygons and ecological units have been revised, based on new information from regional ecologists.  Because of these changes, the new SLCv3.1 polygons are slightly revised from their SLCv2.2 counterparts in some areas.  The new SLCv3.1 polygons are intended to serve as the basic nested units for the next “Version 2.0” of the national Ecostratification hierarchy.  Ecodistrict  numbers are embedded within the new SLCv3.1 polygon numbers, to more directly indicate the hierarchical relationship.  The SLCv3.1 coverage is currently available for the agricultural polygons of Canada.  When the coverage is completed for the remaining, non agricultural areas of Canada, it will serve as the framework for the next complete “Version2” of the ecological stratification of Canada.

The Soil Landscapes of Canada is an excellent ecological framework for integrating and characterizing the biological, physical, climatic and demographic dimensions of land related information on a national and regional basis.  A common national framework for base maps, soil landscape maps and ecological stratification maps will allow better integration of future environmental modeling and assessment activities at national and regional scales.

Purpose:

As a version of the SLC, SLCv3.1 is compiled for National Agri-Environmental Health Analysis and Reporting Program (NAHARP) , National Carbon and Greenhouse Gas Emission Accounting and Verification System (NCGAVS) and other related national programs.

Data_Quality_Information:

Logical_Consistency_Report:

SLCv3.1 linework is compiled based on 1:million scale base maps. The spatial resolution and accuracy is confined by the source scale. SLCv3.1 component information contains nominal, order and interval gis data types. The information is mainly compiled based on detail soil survey and related SNF and SLF. The data type and precision are related to the source of the information.

Completeness_Report:

SLCv3.1 contains component information for the agricultural areas of Canada only. The associated SNF, SLF may also be partially completed to meet this data set need.
