Surface Material

These data are presented as a set of components within each polygon.  The following attributes are included:

Name Description
CMP Component Number (arbitrary)
PERCENT Percent of polygon occupied by the component
MATERIAL Surface Material

Surface material includes the abiotic material at the earth's surface.  The following table shows the class definitions that are used.

Code Class Description
IC ICE and SNOW Glacial ice and permanent snow
OR ORGANIC SOIL Contains > 30% organic matter as measured by weight
RO ROCK Rock undifferentiated
SO MINERAL SOIL Predominantly mineral particles: contains < 30% organic matter as measured by weight
UR URBAN Urban areas. Note that only a few major urban area polygons are included on SLC source maps, therefore, do not use for tabulating total urban coverage
